Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE)
Overview
The RSE Curriculum aims to provide students at Ty Coch with the ability to understand their physical and emotional development and enable them to make positive decisions in their lives.
The curriculum is both age and stage appropriate for the pupils. It follows a natural progression from Foundation Phase through to Key Stage 5. The content and lesson materials can be adapted to suit the needs of the learners. RSE is embedded within the curriculum through the context booklets, it is part of the cross cutting themes of the new curriculum, however, this is not a new concept for us at YTC as the importance of RSE has always been paramount.
The emphasis in the primary department is the Friendship Rainbow. This is used as an agreed approach to teach RSE within the school.
The Relationship Rainbow is used to teach RSE within the secondary department.
We are also fortunate that we have a school nurse with invaluable experience and knowledge who can provide more specialist teaching and advice regarding the teaching of RSE in areas that are more sensitive. We also have access to other health professionals who can teach more specialised subjects within the Relationships Sexuality framework.
Parents will be informed of the teaching of RSE and it will be taught in an age appropriate way, for our learners to keep themselves safe and healthy, be inclusive and in line with the crossing cutting themes of diversity, human rights.
Please see our RSE policy for further updates
If you would wish to chat further about RSE available at Ysgol Ty Coch please don't hesitate to telephone.
We know it can be a new challenge for pupils as they experience puberty so we have held parent workshops for parents to chat about puberty and how parents and the school can help their young person learn about this. In addition, we can offer bespoke meetings with parents.
