Ysgol Ty Coch
Ysgol Ty Coch
Ysgol Tŷ Coch is a special day school maintained by Rhondda Cynon Taf local authority. The school provides education for pupils aged 3-19 with profound and multiple learning difficulties, autistic spectrum disorder and severe learning difficulties.
The school opened in 1978, taking pupils with severe learning difficulties. The school has since developed, and we now take a range of pupils with additional learning needs. We have approximately 250 pupils on role. There are discrete autistic classes and an assessment foundation class, in addition to sensory classes and learners who are in Post 16.
Ysgol Tŷ Coch is situated in a pleasant residential area with both small shops and a major supermarket nearby. The school has community playing fields and a wooded area adjoining. The school grounds have been developed to include a sensory garden. There is also a sensory room on site, Yr Nest.
The school is based on three sites. The main school site is situated in Tonteg and provides education for primary and secondary aged pupils. Some of the sixth form pupils access a room in Coleg y Cymoedd for five days a week, where they experience college life with school staff, helping them transition to Post 19 education. In September 2014, the school opened a satellite site at Buarth y Capel in Ynysybwl. This site provides specialist support for pupils aged 11-19 with autistic spectrum disorder.
